Inside and Outside of the Screens
—— from Being-gazed-at to Self-gaze (2019)
This essay examines how gendered space is shaped through the gendered gaze surrounding screens, focusing on the spatial and graphical characteristics of Yongzheng’s Screen of 12 Beauties. It explores the screen both as an art form and as a physical partition, analyzing the relationship between materiality, identity, and graphics. Drawing on Laura Mulvey’s concept of the male gaze, the essay applies this theory to understand how gendered gaze influences the creation and function of these artworks.
Ultimately, it highlights how screens in ancient China contributed to the formation of gendered spaces and explores the distinction between the screen's material presence and its graphical representation.
